The goal of all my courses is to achieve both competence and confidence with your camera, treating it as a tool to capture and process images for whatever purpose. They are designed for the aspiring nature photographer who may have a variety of kit depending on their level of experience or what they wish to capture. On some workshops, only a basic kit is required such as a digital SLR or 35mm film SLR camera body with a short focal length zoom such as 18mm-55mm and a medium focal length zoom such as a 70-300mm (these focal lengths may vary depending on the film or digital format and are only recommended as a guide, advice can be given on request). On other workshops, such as Woodland Birds', a longer focal length may be desirable and full details are given on the respective course page. Further equipment such as good tripods, bean-bags and macro lenses are a bonus especially on some of the insect or fungi courses and will become increasingly important as the photographer progresses.

I do not teach the use of hybrid, bridge or point & shoot cameras.

If you are a beginner, I strongly recommend any of the beginner's courses; either the 'Beginning Nature Photography Workshop' which I teach for Sussex Wildlife Trust at Woods Mill or the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust at Arundel. 'Capture to Computer' is also a very comprehensive workshop for either beginners or improvers alike and covers both beginner's photography as well as digital workflow. These workshops give each student a solid foundation of photographic knowledge and allow more to be gained from more specialist courses such as adders or woodland birds which are notoriously fickle to the photographer.

A lot of the specialist courses involve dealing with the respective wildlife subjects as well as the technical aspects of photography as this is an essential and large component of achieving beautiful images from nature.   Dealing with wildlife, such as getting close or even finding the subject are crucial components of my workshops. I feel that in wildlife photography, the actual technical aspect with the camera is just 15% of the job.
